About Lance Denzel Gulley

Lance Denzel Gulley is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter whose artistry crosses all Black American Music genres such as jazz, blues, R&B/soul, gospel, funk, and rock. With a voice that has been described as "healing" "meditative" and "soulful and organic", Gulley connects the rich lows of a baritone to the startling highs of a countertenor, using their voice for sonic collective healing and storytelling beyond their years. Since arriving on the scene, Gulley has performed as a leader and sideman at Detroit's top music venues: Baker's Keyboard Lounge, Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe, Cliff Bell's, Bert's Marketplace, Aretha's Jazz Cafe and played festivals such as the Michigan Jazz Festival and East Lansing's Summer Solstice Jazz Festival.

Born and raised in Detroit, MI, Gulley grew up singing in the children's choir at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, later at their elementary school, and eventually became a member of the Detroit Children's Choir. They received classical training on violin and viola from the age of seven and was a member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Civic Youth Ensembles and began their formal jazz bass studies in ninth grade studying under Lamont Johnson, Marion Hayden, Ralphe Armstrong, Rodney Whitaker, and many more of Detroit's finest. Gulley is a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy and a student at Oberlin College and Conservatory in Oberlin, OH studying voice under LaTanya Hall. They are currently based in Detroit, MI raising vibrations.
